Thomas Foust is the Director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s National Bioenergy Center (NBC). The NBC is a world leading organization of approximately 175 engineering and scientific staff performing cutting edge work to develop cost effective, environmentally sustainable technology for producing transportation fuels and products from biomass by delivering innovative, cost-effective biofuels solutions. Foust is a comprehensive expert in the biofuels field. His areas of expertise include feedstock production, biomass conversion technologies to fuels and products, and environmental and societal sustainability issues associated with biofuels and bioenergy. He has over 25 years of research and research management experience specializing in biomass feedstocks and conversion research. He has over 100 publications in the biomass field covering all aspects of biofuels technology. Foust has a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University. He is a licensed Professional Engineer.

Biomass

Han’s primary research focuses on forest operations which involve the application of various forest management tools and processes to achieve a wide range of objectives in forest management. He has been conducting studies on economics, operational advantages and constraints for various harvesting equipment and systems. Topics associated with forest biomass harvesting, collection and transportation for energy generation have been a main theme of his research for the last 15 years. As seen in his past publications, He is interested in designing efficient operations systems and developing innovative equipment to improve economic feasibility of utilization of forest residues such as logging slash and non-merchantable small-diameter trees for energy production. For example, his research teams recently evaluated centralized slash grinding operations which was combined with roll on/off and hook-lift container trucks to improve access to remote areas and machine utilization rates. Collaboration with other disciplines such as wood chemistry (e.g. gasification) and forest ecology (nutrient impacts from biomass removal) has been also a key approach to comprehensively address recent challenges related to biomass removal and utilization. For the W2W project, Han will be responsible for development of cost-effective biomass harvesting systems and evaluation of innovative machines and tools in biomass feedstock operations.

George T. Tsao is an emeritus professor of Purdue University. In 1978, he established the Laboratory of Renewable Resources Engineering at Purdue. His major research interest has been biochemical engineering involved in syntheses of biochemicals and biofuels from waste biomass. He has had about 300 technical publications and patents related to subjects in his field. He trained a total of 72 doctoral students and 64 post-doctorates. He is the first recipient of the John Ericsson Award issued by the U S Department of Energy, cited for outstanding in research on bioenergy. Professor Tsao's very early emphasis on the valuable potential of renewable resources to human well being has been awarded and recognized as a world leader in the advent of industrial biotechnology by Visionaries of Industrial Biotechnology.

Tatjana Stevanovic has completed her undergraduate and graduate studies up to PhD at the University of Belgrade at which she was teaching Wood Chemistry and Chemical Transformation of Wood until 1997. Since then she is teaching these same cources at Laval University and performing research on bioactive polyphenols as well as on polymeric applications of lignins. She has published numerous scientific papers and book chapters as well as Wood chemistry textbook. She has deposited a international patent on new organoslv process leading to highly pure lignin along with cellulose pulp and bioactive extractives from pre-extraction.

Hermes José Loschi holds a BSc in Control and Automation Engineering from Paulista University. He has undergone several postgraduate studies, focused on Wireless Sensor Network, Smart Grid, Broadcasting, Photovoltaic Systems Applications, Energy, Biomass and Solar Tracking, through the performance as a researcher by the Laboratory of Visual Communications of the State University of Campinas. He has published more than 12 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as editorial board member and reviewer of some academic journals and research centers.

Pascale Champagne completed her PhD in Environmental Engineering 2001 from Carleton University. She is a Professor in Civil Engineering with a cross-appointment to Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Bioresource Engineering. She has been recepient of a number of resarch awards and was inducted into The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in the inaugural cohort of the Royal Society of Canada in 2014. She has published more than 75 journal papers in reputable journals in her field, 9 book chapters and her work has been presented in more than 185 conference presentations.

Anthony Bridgwater is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at Aston University in Birmingham, specialising in thermal conversion of biomass for production of fuels and chemicals. He obtained his first degree in Chemical Engineering from UMIST followed by several years working for BP in Sunbury. After returning to Aston, He gained my PhD and DSc. Most of His professional career has been spent at Aston University where He lead the European Bioenergy Research Institute (EBRI) and Bioenergy Research Group within EBRI.

Development of fast pyrolysis of biomass and the fuel and chemical products that can be derived from the liquids

Dr Junwang Tang is a Reader in Energy, Leader of Solar Energy and Advanced Materials Group in the Department and a Fellow of the RSC. He currently leads a research team including postdoctoral researchers, academic visitors and research students with financial support from EU PF7, Qatar, UK EPSRC, Leverhulme, Royal Society, RAE and so on.

Research interests encompass structure-controlled nanomaterials synthesis by a flow system powered by microwave irradiation, solar H2 synthesis from water, CO2 capture and conversion to a renewable fuel, photocatalytic water treatment, microwave catalysis and biomaterials fabrication. Such studies are undertaken in parallel with the mechanistic understanding and device optimisation to address the renewable energy supply and environmental purification.

Professor Joe Wood completed a BEng degree in Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University and PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge (2001). He has three years of industrial experience with BP and Albright and Wilson. Since 2001 he has worked at the University of Birmingham, where he was awarded a Chair in 2012 and leads the Chemical Reaction Engineering Group in the School of Chemical Engineering. He has published 72 journal papers and four book chapters.

Professor Wood carries out research on upgrading of bio-oil, hydrogenation of furfural, in-situ upgrading of heavy oil, capture of carbon dioxide from industrial sources, catalyst development and testing, reactor design and engineering.

Prof. Miklas Scholz, cand ing, BEng (equiv), PgC, MSc, PhD, CWEM, CEnv, CSci, CEng, FHEA, FIEMA, FCIWEM, FICE, Fellow of IWA holds the Chair in Civil Engineering at The University of Salford. He is the Head of the Civil Engineering Research Group. Prof. Scholz has shown individual excellence evidenced by world-leading publications. About 46% and 45% of his research is in water resources management and wastewater treatment, respectively. He has published three textbooks and 177 journal articles. Since 2015, he topped the publication list in terms of numbers for all members of staff at The University of Salford. Prof. Scholz’s full journal article publications in recent years are as follows: 2009 (13), 2010 (19), 2011 (13), 2012 (21), 2013 (17) and 2014 (15). Prof. Scholz has total citations of more than 2845 (above 2122 citations since 2010), resulting in an h-index of 28 and an i10-Index of 64.

Dr. J.P. Paredes-Sánchez is a professor in the Department of Energy at the University of Oviedo, Spain. He received his PhD in Energy Engineering in 2010, at the University of Oviedo (Spain), and has been associated with national and international research projects at the Oviedo Higher Technical School of Mining and Engineering since 2007. He is the author or co-author of tens of papers and conferences on renewable energy and energy efficiency. He has published books about university education and energy sources. He is also involved in European programs for updating renewable energy research and higher education.

Research focus has been on the theory and application in the combination of conventional and non-conventional energy and Modelling of Biomass Energy Systems (BES), with a background in bioenergy research and hybridization techniques using energy sources.

Nicola Senesi is Professor Emeritus of the University of Bari “Aldo Moro”, where he was Full Professor of Soil Chemistry from 1986 to 2013, and developed all his academic career since 1969. Adnan Midilli, General Secretary of Hydrogen Technologies Association in Turkey, is a Professor of Energy Division in Mechanical Engineering Department at Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan University in Rize, Turkey, specialising in biomass conversion processes and technologies for production of fuels, thermodynamic analysis of energy systems, energy policies and sustainability. He is the funding dean of Faculty of Engineering and worked to be vice rector for Science, Technology and Innovation. His expertise and practical experience also covers the areas of water and wastewater quality monitoring and management, water and wastewater treatment technology assessment and pollution control.
